Future of a Forever Home Landscape (Haydenville, MA)

The homeowners of this property in Haydenville presented a unique and challenging property that included shallow bedrock, a wetland, and active construction of a small cabin on a nearby parcel. The goal was to create a forever home landscape they and their children could grow alongside. The final design incorporated a wetland restoration based on a shallow emergent marsh community commonly used by amphibian species in the area. A boardwalk allows for access across the wetland without causing any damage by walking on the ground or having to push through dense planting. New spaces for food growing dot the main lot and the cabin lot. Redefining the entry pattern from the eastern parking pad to the main house and the cabin was necessary do to some confusion. It also offered a chance to reduce impervious surface. The cabin has several layers of privacy plantings to shield it from the southern neighbors and the driveway to the northern neighbors’ homes. This project is design only as the homeowners intend to implement it themselves.
